JCK Gets Mixed Reviews

Posted: June 14, 2004

The results of The JCK Show — Las Vegas 2004, held June 4-8 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center, could best be described as "spotty." Some vendors had an excellent show; some had a very poor one. All agreed that traffic was down from last year, and with a show that large, exhibitors relied on their own promotional abilities, their product mix, and blind luck to attract buyers.

In jewelry, retail buyers leaned toward conservative, "bread and butter" items. Where they ventured into designer jewelry, they bought trendier items that promised a quick turnover, especially in lower price points. Dangling earrings were a hot seller, although buyers are turning away from wide, flashy, "chandelier" styles to the more streamlined "stiletto" earrings, which typically feature a single, thin piece of metal hanging straight down with a moving element at the end. Cocktail rings set with a single, large gemstone were also popular buys, as was any jewelry with dangling, moving elements.

In terms of cuts, briolettes continued to be popular, and a number of companies were featuring "sugarloaf" cuts in large gemstones as alternatives to the more typical rounded-dome cabochons.

Pink gems continued to reign as popular buys, although they are starting to give way to the yellows and oranges of gems like citrine, yellow sapphire, and spessartite garnet and the greens of emerald, peridot, and green tourmaline. Loose gem dealers who had large, dark blue zircons reported doing well with them, as did dealers with pink and yellow sapphire.

Despite the iffy results of the show, most of the vendors interviewed for this article did better than at the 2003 JCK show. And companies from all sectors of the industry reported that business has been strong this spring, which they attributed to a recovery in the economy. Fall could be another story, however, as Americans watch for the results of the presidental elections in November.
